website redesign

How often should you redesign your website?

Are you looking at your website and wondering if it's time for a redesign? Did you find this article through a Google search for "Is it time to redesign my website?" Your instincts might be telling you something... But let's get a little more scientific about our answer to this question, shall we?

When is it time to redesign your website?

Industry experts say you should redesign your website every 2-5 years. That's a pretty wide window, so here are some questions to ask to help you figure out if it's time for a redesign.

  • Are all of your features working? Are things broken?

One of the easiest ways to know your programming is out of date is that things stop working as expected. Web forms stop sending. Links stop working. Navigation menus don't load correctly. Sometimes you can bandage things up for a bit, but this may be a sign that a redesign is due.

  • Does it work well on mobile devices?

With over half of website visitors using their mobile phones to access websites these days, your website NEEDS to be mobile friendly.

  • Is the design modern?

This one is more objective since we all have different tastes and style. However, if your website is taking up only a fraction of the browser screen, has old school flash animations, or is using Comic Sans as the primary font, it's probably time.

  • Do you dread making website updates because it's hard?

WordPress editing has gotten a lot easier over the years. If your site content feels difficult to update, a redesign can help.

  • Do you still like it?

Are you just tired of how your website looks? Maybe it's just time for a fresh look.

How to redesign a website

There are a few ways to redesign a website and several factors that come into play, including:

  • budget
  • timeline
  • work needed
  • how dissatisfied you are with the old/current site

I usually get started by asking the client to make a list of the things they want to change on their website. Then I ask them to do a little homework, looking at websites in their genre that they do like, for both design and content inspiration. I (obviously) NEVER copy anything, but I've found this is one of the easiest ways for the client and I to communicate about what they have in mind for their redesign.

Website Redesign Services

Blue Lake Websites offers WordPress redesign services for new and existing clients.

I often put redesign projects into 4 different categories:

  • Enhanced redesign

An enhanced redesign includes both design and content updates, and possibly an all new sitemap and site organization.

  • Theme redesign

A redesign of the "theme" of the website keeps mostly the same content, but gives things a fresh new look. If your website is already built with WordPress, we may be able put a new "skin" on the content and freshen up the design without much expense. If this is the case, I may be able to provide you with a new look for as little as $500.

  • Admin redesign

An admin redesign is how I refer to updates of the admin/"backend" of the website, keeping the front-end look of a site, but updating programming for editing ease and security. Do you wish the content was easier to manage? Let's install the Beaver Builder page builder and make your life easier. (If you still love the look of your site, I have redesigned the "admin" side of websites without changing much at all about the visitor's view.)

  • Feature redesign

We don't need to redesign the full website to bring something fresh to the web. I can also help you reimagine more than just a fresh new look and simpler editing. Maybe we can add some new features, additional content to build your business, or a popup to collect email addresses for your email marketing campaigns.

How much does it cost to redesign a website?

Pricing for a website redesign is dependent on a number of factors: size of the website, complexity of design, website features, etc. An enhanced redesign for a larger website may cost thousands of dollars, which a "freshening" of your theme may run just $500.
